u joints can be a son of a gun to get out if you dont have a good vice or press...and dont even get me started about those idiotic little clips in the caps....I just pulled my axle shafts out and brought them over to a local garage and had them change them out. I provided the parts obviously so it only cost me 30 bucks in labor. WELL worth it.

rent/borrow a ball joint press from your local parts store. it make it a lot easier.

just be very sure that when you start cranking down on the press that the u-joint arm is engaged in the bearing cap - because if you catch the edge of a needle bearing, the enormous pressure from that press will shatter it in a flash. i've done it, and then you have to either buy a new joint, or pull an old needle from another cap and hope you clean out all the shattered chips.
