Default Parking brake malfunction

First off: 2001 2500 QC Sport 4x4 (Cummings Diesel)

This is not my truck, but I borrow it every once in awhile from a friend to use for hauling purposes since my truck is down at the moment. His parking brake doesn't hold very much, especially when on an incline/decline, and he has told me it's because he has left the brake on too many times. I would like to fix it for him if it's not too inclusive for allowing me to use it like he does. Sure, I fill up the tank for him but this would be cool to do just because he is so willing to allow me the use of it, ya know? Is this a common thing, and if so, is it normally a "replace parts to fix", or just an adjustment one can make?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Cheers!

Download the facory service manual from the FAQ's section.
The procedure should be in there on how to do it.

Download the 2001 service manual from the FAQ/DIY section and adjust the rear brake drums/shoes. Do that first, you will also find in the manual how to adjust the park brake cable. Try adjusting rear brakes first. The shoes should probably also be inspected.
