Default Instrument cluster swapability

My truck has no tach even though it's a manual. The PO mounted an ugly *** tach on the A pillar that works, but is hideous and actually blocks my view somewhat. I can pick up an intstrument cluster (with a tach) for less than $30 at the local pull a part. Would this be plug and play with my current truck? Would the odometers be changed? If so, then it's a no go I suppose. I assume the PCM already keeps track of RPM, but not sure if it sends the proper signal to the cluster for a factory tach. I have the orange upshift arrow light, so that leads me to believe it is watching rpm and sending a signal to the dash. Whether that signal comes from actual rpm measures or something else like vacuum, I have no idea. Anybody have any input about this? Thanks.

Ok, nevermind I searched some more and found out. The truck I'm looking at it for is a 2001, so it should work. Hopefully it is 4wd too, since I doubt the 4wd light is on a 2wd. I also see that the mileage will change, but mileage is exempt anyway in my state after a vehicle is 10 years old. I'll just write down the mileage and date on a piece of tape before I swap it, and tape it to the old cluster and keep it. If I ever sell it, the buyer will get the old cluster and full disclosure. Couldn't find out if the tach will work or not, but this place has 30 day return policy, so might as well give it a try and see.

Ok mods, please delete this conversation with myself. I finally found a thread with EXACTLY what I need.

Looks like I will be looking for a 99 4x4 something with the same type dash.
I relinquish 5 interweb horsepowers for my mistake.

Up at 3:00 AM?

The dash will swap right out, and you can get the mileage reflashed at the dealer. Some independent shops may be able to do as well. Call around, see what you can find.

Was at work unfortunately. I pulled one out of a 99 Dakota today with a manual! Perfect match. I still have the economy shift arrow and I don't have an out of place PRND321 like I did a trans swap. I also picked up a 95 Taurus 3.8L fan and shroud for a future e-fan setup all for under $60. Really loving the junkyard availability of this thing. Really beats fixing Rovers and Bimmers like I've had before. Oh, and I'm not worried about reflashing the odometer. The miles are exempt on this (over 10 years old), and I kept the old cluster and wrote down the date and mileage for both of them. If I ever sell it, the new owner will have this info. I actually gained 12k miles with the new one, so it's not like I'm rolling back miles, ha.

For anyone that wants to do a cluster swap on the older rams, I have a 95 stickshift with no tach, just picked up a tach out of a 96 with a tach and plugged right in!
