My trans went out. Clutches are toast (black powder in the fluid.) I took the pan out to look. I was going to buy a rebuild kit and my buddy is going to help me fix it.

I didnt get a chance to ask him yet so i figured id ask here.

I have a 1996 Dodge ram 1500. How do i tell what tranny i have? 46RE? is it located anywhere on the body? Transmissions are the only thing im stupid with on vehicles lol

Also my budget is like $200ish. Can anyone recommend a rebuild kit? Like from ebay? I dont do heavy stuff, just a daily driver and some occasional off roading, but nothing serious. I just need the truck to drive again so i can possibly sell it/go to school.

46RE. You aren't going to be able to rebuild it for 200 bucks. You should spend at least that on just the torque converter. NOT replacing the t/c is pretty much a guarantee you will get to do the rebuild again, soon.

The A518, later renamed 46RH (hydraulic controlled governor pressure) and 46RE (electronic controlled governor pressure), is an A727 derivative with overdrive, in the A500 ilk. Starting in the early 1990s, it was used in trucks and vans. The overdrive fourth gear ratio is 0.69:1.
