if you put the trans in neutral and leave the rear wheels on the ground and rotate the drive shaft back and forth - how much drive shaft rotation do you have... as in how much pinion-to-ring slop do you have?

I put a mark on the side of the pig nose... rolled the tailshaft to take all the slack out in one direction, and put a coinciding mark on the pinion seal shield... then rolled the tailshaft the other way and marked the shield again.

Distance between the marks is ¼".

Trying to remember from when I set up my gears. Seems like I was getting less than 1/8" when backlash was correct.
Check for lateral movement of the pinion? Could be a bad pinion bearing.

Remove the tail shaft and then do this again. You should have no more than 1/16 slop in ring gear/p gear. As you have a lsd there will be more play (lack of better word) past the R&P lash, so yes the yoke might turn 1/4" to 1/2" before this play is taken up. This play is in the clutch pack and is norm to a point. So you are feeling for R&P lash first then clutch pack play. The best way to test R&P lash is to remove the cover and use a dial gauge to measure the lash.

With 161k on the original, and a recent whine, I know it's got to be up for a rebuild.
I don't know that it is dramatically more than it ever was, it's just having a snappier engine is making it more annoying.

Does this issue even raise it's head with an auto transmission?... (you don't have engine breaking).

What would be a good alternative for the stock LSD without going overboard on capabilities or dollars?

^^^ Not a ez answer, there are a few flavors out there for the 9.25 rear diff. Be careful when looking at parts for the 9.25 as you will see apps for front 9.25 diffs used in the newer Dodge trucks and these do not fit the 9.25 rear diffs at all.

I would look at one of these for a DD

A TrueTrac was on my distant radar... looks like I may as well do it sooner than later.

Any comments on the weight (damper?) at the front of the tailshaft?
When braking, there seems to be an oscillation between it and the wheels, slapping back and forth at the driveline play.
