+1 on the Haynes manual. IMHO, it's more step by step shadetree mechanic without getting bogged down in technical details.

I've had one for every car I've owned in the last 10 years, and its always been a great resource for the simple stuff. Lets you get a feel for all your regular maintenance and repairs, but warns you when you're in over your head.

BTW, autozone's website has a lot of the Haynes manual available for viewing for free. You just have to register for their site and click on "Repair Help."

If all else fails, you might have to end up pulling the hub and soaking everything in your PB Blaster/WD40 of choice. I had one years back that the cylinder seized and there was nothing else I could do but dismantle it from the backside.
