Default misfire/tink/knock

hello all, this is my first thread and im pretty new to this forum. i have 96 1500 5,9 360 sport. 165k. pretty much all stock.

i went on a mini vacation earlier this week and my truck sat for 3 days while i was gone. she ran fine prior to leaving.. when i got back i went to start her up and everything seemed fine until i went to drive it. it started to shake while driving and i reckon its a misfire.

i changed the plugs last night and im still getting the misfire. though there are no codes being thrown on the dash. i dont have a obd2 reader or whatever its called. but what is strange and what worry's me more than the misfire, is when i went to put it into reverse there was a small "tinking" sound or knock coming from under the truck. it almost sounds like its coming from the exhaust area but im not quite sure. it also happens when its in drive. its not a consistent noise and it happens irregularly but it happens only in drive and reverse. i checked again this morning and as soon as i started her up and put it in drive with break i could still hear this. ive looked around all morning and last night and im not sure what it is. ive seen things about a "spark knock" but i dont know what that sounds like. i replaced the transmission and tcase this last winter and everything worked fine until now. ive seen different things about the plenum going bad and what not. i just need a more weathered answer to my specific question. please help!

anything will help.

thanks!

Start by checking for any stored codes. http://dodgeram.info/Engine-Gas/OBDI/pcm_fault_code.htm

There aren't any codes showing. I'll be honest bough the bulb might be burnt out. Are stored codes visible?

Sorry it's late I just got off work.

does your check engine light cycle when you turn the key on? Meaning, does it come on for a couple seconds and then shut off? If it does, then the bulb isn't burned out. Also take a look at the link that zman put in his post if you haven't already.

I will check the link and take a look at the light. I'm pretty sure though that there aren't any codes.. Yet. Haha.

I've got new spark cables to put on, I've just read a lot of threads and that never seems to be it.

You need to add ALL the info about your truck to your sig AND profile please. And when you turn the key to the on position before starting the engine, do you see the pic that looks like an engine? When you do the key trick on a 96 it will flash like in the link I gave you. If not , the bulb is most likely burned out and needs replace.

Well it's been a little while. I figured it jumped timing and what not so I went from there.

It jumped the timing I replaced the timing kit and it starts. Now what ever was wrong before it jumped timing is still wrong. It misses and backfires. It also dies when in idle. I did adjust the distritbutor rotor.

And once again there are no codes being thrown.

You should not have moved the distributor, put it back where it was. You'll need to have someone with a capable scanner reset the fuel sync. That's all moving the dizzy does, timing is controlled by pcm.
