While driving on a normal street, coming home from work last week, my rear diff nuked itself. Bought all the parts for a all new diff and discovered a nice bog hole-crack in the axle housing. Does anyone know how much a whole new rear axle housing would cost from a junk yard or how much its going to be for a shop to do it? Thanks

 

Prices vary dramatically by region... and also what's in the axle, etc. You can generally find them for a couple hundred bucks, or less, on craigslist, or the local yard.

Shop prices vary quite a bit as well. Best bet would be to call around, and get estimates for what you want done. If you can find a diff with the right ratio (and maybe an LSD?), just swapping them out would be cheaper. (and something you could conceivably do yourself....)

 

I think truck diffs are like 75 at the local pull a part here.

 

Well i have the Diff, its the housing thats cracked. On the opposite side of the diff cover.

 

Can you please post a picture of the crack? Perhaps it can be repaired by having it welded?
