Shifting/ Redlineing
So, Ive owned my 98 Dodge Ram 5.2l for a year now, 196,000 miles, Trans fluid is up to level. Back in October I did a Huhges Plenum gasket fix, While doing it I snapped off the TV cable and ended up replacing it. While I was under there I connected the new one and ran it up through and got it all back together, and made all kinds of adjustments to the TV cable, I just can't find the right shift points. So I did my best and put it to the adjustment that felt right to me, after this adjustment I started getting redlining for 1st gear, If I granny the throttle it shifts smooth, but from a dead stop and pedal all the way to the floor it would accelerate and then would redline 5k and wouldn't shift into 2nd til I let off and back on. So I contacted the local Chrysler dealer bout this and the said go ahead and take the clip off the TV cable and have a 2nd person go inside the truck and put the pedal to the floor and replace the clip and it should put it back to factory shift settings. So I went ahead and did that. Went out for a drive and put the pedal to the floor and shifted right as it hit 5k and into 2nd. Every now and then occasionally when I take off and floor it it will Redline like it was before. Im just confused what I've got to do to get the right shift points. I also notice if Im doing 35mph or so and punch it it kicks down but kind of hunts for the right gear. Am I needing new shift solenoids? Band adjustments? or just a simple TV cable adjustment again, Im not to sure if the dealer was correct about the TV adjustment or if that was complete BS. I appreciate it guys! Sorry for such a long write up. Thanks, Alec
Proper procedure for adjusting TV cable is in the service manual. Download the 01 version from the thread in the faq section.
These transmission are notorious for erratic shifting at WOT. The governor pressure sensor gets confused, and the PCM doesn't quite know what to do. If you spend a lot of time with your toenails in the radiator, converting to the GM style governor pressure sensor/solenoid is going to be the hot ticket.
