Default Transmission has sloppy shifts, then firm engagement?

Title says it all. 01 1500 2wd, stock 46re transmission. Occasionally it seems to want to hunt for the gear for 2 seconds, then "lock" in and doesn't slip once it's engaged. Occasionally flares between 2 and 3 for a second.

Dropped the pan 6k miles ago, some sludge but not as bad as expected. Cleaned it all out, new fluid, did not adjust the bands or change sensors.

So, does this problem sound like a band adjustment or sensor change would help? What about the Sonnex Sure Cure MonteC was talking about?

Is it a bad idea to do change sensors or use the sure cure without rebuilding the tranny first? I dont want to put the sure cure on the VB or change sensors and then have to redo all of that later when the tranny finally gives up the ghost.

Band adjustment sure won't hurt. (done properly....)

Not sure if sensors would make a difference.... although, since you are going to be in there anyway...... sure wouldn't hurt.

Sonax kit is never a bad plan. Of course, if you have a high mileage trans, and think it might be on its last legs, just going straight to a rebuild may not be a bad plan either. Of course, that does tend to be somewhat more expensive.

Best bet may be to have a look at the bands. See how much friction material is left. If it ain't much, go for a rebuild. If they look ok, just do the above, however much of it you care to, and run with it.

Add a drain plug to your list. It will make your life far more pleasant.

Yep, had a momentary brush with intelligence last time and installed a drain plug with the last fluid change after reading on our wonderful trucks and figuring I'd be in there again soon.

Don't worry, intelligence won't happen again.

How much material *should* there be on the bands? 1/8 an inch? 1/32?

Don't know how much material should be on the bands, but after adjusting you should see some threads still showing on the adjusting screws. Not looking like this,( the nut just below the TV cable lever)
