I've read it before but it's been a while, will be reading again soon.

I have been researching torque converters and read the MonteC Transmission Corner thread. I've decided to go with a tighter low stall PNH converter to keep it cool and increase efficiency, Sonnax shift kit, band adjustment, check valve delete, and cooler flush, filter, add drain plug.
And maybe the GM Governor pressure solenoid kit, what do you think?

How many solenoids are in the trans? Is it these 3, Governor Pressure, Lockup, and Overdrive? Should replace all or none of them?

Only problem I have is TCC lockup failure.

See what the fluid in your pan looks like. If there is a lot of junk in it, just replacing the torque converter may just buy you a bit of time. If the clutches in the t/c are disintegrating, they are scattering that debris throughout the trans. Not a good scene.

GM conversion runs around 200 bucks. I think when monte's thread was in it's heyday, the borg-warner solenoid wasn't commonly available yet. Going with those (bw solenoid, and whatever pressure sensor they come with...) is right around 100 bucks. It is also self-cleaning, which the stock solenoids are not.

Parts you want to replace: Governor pressure sensor and solenoid, TCC and O/D solenoids. That is all the electronic parts in your trans.

Thanks for that info HeyYou, I'll check out the bw pressure solenoid. I'm going to pull the pan this weekend and see what I'm dealing with.

Drained the transmission today, this oil is only about 1year old, looks very dark silty brown, pretty much what I expected. Magnet had a decent amount of fine buildup on it. Filter looks very brown. Luckily there's no glazing on the valve body so I don't think it got hot very long at all.

I'll be picking up a new Low Stall Precision of New Hampton torque converter this week for $150
Borg Warner solenoid kit $185
---Includes:
---Governor Pressure Solenoid (Borg-Warner Heavy Duty)
---Governor Pressure Sensor (Transducer)
---Lock-up & Overdrive Solenoid with Harness
---Output Speed Sensor with O-Ring
---3-4 Accumulator Spring (.126 Upgrade)
---Transmission Filter
---Pan Gasket (Duraprene)
---Governor Solenoid Body Gasket
Sonnax Sure Cure shift kit $135
Floor Jack Transmission Saddle Adapter $55
I also ordered new pan with drain plug $50
11 quarts ATF+4 $61
Total so far $636

Does the trans come out with 4x4 gear box attached?

Filter is very brown

This is supposed to be bright silver, the TC friction dust is coating everything

You can drop the trans with, or without the t-case attached. I think its easier dropping the t-case first. Makes the 'package' a lot lighter, and easier to deal with.
