Default 1997 1500 4x4 transmission no engage

1997 1500 4x4 318 3sp auto transmission

We just swapped tranny's on this truck. The old one went out with a bang. All forward gears were out but reverse was still good. I figured it was the front clutch?? We found a used tranny and case for 400 bucks. Yea I know great deal???? New tranny was unknown. Year? Mileage? etc...? What I have now is when the new tranny is hot it shuts down to a no engage condition. Nothing. No engage at all. Wait 10 minutes tranny engages no problem and you can drive normal until it heats up again then back to the same no engage condition. I just installed a tranny cooler and now I have a no engage condition all the time. The truck is stuck in the drive way. Almost like I'm getting no pressure from the pump. I changed fluid and filter at the beginning so both fluid and filter have gone through the engage and no engage conditions. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!!

More info on this. I let it cool down to bone cold. When I do this I get 1 minute of transmission time. Engages no problem R-D-1-2 no problem after my minute is up it's just as if I shifted the tranny into neutral?? Is there a tranny temp sensor in the tranny that could be malfunctioning?

Moving this to the correct section.

Check your fluid level. Engine up to temp, trans in neutral. See what it looks like.
