Default What oil should I use?

I was wondering what oil that ya'll think I should use? My truck has 135k on it and I'm using Mobil 1 Synthetic, I'll probably stay with that brand or switch to Amsoil, but I'm a little lost on what weight to use I've been told different things by different people, so any suggestions would be great, thanks.

I live in Raleigh North Carolina, it can get pretty cold here, not like the north but it can get into the teens and once in a blue moon below 10 degrees. Steve, is there a specific reason that you use 15w-50, my owners manual says to use 10w-40, I don't know much about oil so what is the difference between the different numbers?

personal preference I guess... I tried the 30 wt oils in the past and felt like the motor was not getting enough protection. just sounded different than with the 50 wt oil. I've had my truck up in the mtns in the winter when the temps got down below 20 deg and have never had any issues relating to the oil (mobil 1). I just give it plenty of time to warm up.

well the manual says to use 10-30 for temps 15-20 and up, but i've only got 30 k on mine. says also to use 5-15w if the temps are below the 10 mark. but that's the owners manual so who really knows......

I just got my 2001 Ram last Wednesday. I changed to oil today with Mobile 1, 10W-30. I've got 70K miles so I need all the protection I can get.

The viscosity grade (5W-30) tells you the oil's thickness, or viscosity. A thin oil has a lower number and flows more easily, while thick oils have a higher number and are more resistant to flow. The first number indicates the viscosity of the oil at a cold temperature, while the second number indicates the viscosity at operating temperature.

Mobil oil is a good choice to see what they recomend for your vehicle check out:
