Exclamation truck wont stay started, bogs down if foot not on gas

Hey,

I have 1996 ram 1500 regular cab 5.9 v8 4x4. and the first time this happened was right after i filled up at a speedway gas station, i tried starting my truck and it just bogged right down and died, i tried a second time and it did the same thing, on the third time it started and stayed started but the rpms were below 1000...i made it home and didnt think anything of it. the next day i went to go to work and it fired up still bogged down but stayed started...i got down the block and it was completely dead when i let off the gas pedal to turn...it will now stay started but die out of i apply a little gas and let off. only stays running if i keep pressure on the pedal. any suggestions? THANKS!!

Check the fuel psi at the fuel rail with a tester, should be 49 psi. Sounds like a new fuel pump is needed.

You might also want to read the plenum sticky.

Are you sure you didn't put in diesel fuel?

If you know you got quality gasoline, another thing to look at would be the IAC (Idle Air Controller). Its located in the intake, right beneath the air filter. It might need to be cleaned with carb cleaner, or possibly needs replacing.

little late on the follow up, but it was a clogged cat, i cut off a piece of pipe before the cat and it stayed running. Let it idle for about 10 minutes took it for a drive and worked great from then on out. just got the new exhaust system put on and have yet to have trouble with it

Need to find out just why the cat clogged in the first place. If you haven't fixed your plenum yet, that is the most likely culprit.

do you think that would explain why it recently started idling roughly, gas cap CEL code (which i bought the new cap and light only went off for a couple days) and its burning through gas like crazy lately

To HeyYou's point, the easiest symptom of a bad plenum is using excessive oil. Have you had to keep adding oil at regular intervals?

Are you sure you don't have a gas leak some where?

Yeah, there is a pump for it... and a line that leads right to the engine.
