Did a search on the forum couldn't find anything about this riddle so Im gonna ask.

The night the truck acted up I noticed a loud pop then a grinding noise which got louder when I placed the tranny in the Park position.

After we got the truck back home. So I would have some steering and brakes I started the motor and got the same noise. Checked the fluid on the stick and it was clean, have yet to drop the pan to see if theres anything there.

What my question/riddle is, since the Convertor/Pump turns when the engine is running could this be a busted convertor? Ive seen pump repair sleeves and Im guessing this would repair the connection where the TC locks into the pump.

If that's the cause I can save myself the cost of a new tranny but I will get everything flushed, as well as switching it to synthetic fluid so it will maybe run cooler.

 

ATF +4 IS synthetic. Spending more on fluid won't help you.

Grinding in park is not a good sign. Make sure it isn't something external first, like maybe the starter relay sticking..... If you have to pull the trans, I would replace it...... flushing it will do more harm than good, especially if the t/c has already grenaded.

 

Would be nice to know if its 2wd or 4wd. Could be the transfer case. Please add ALL the info about your truck to your sig and profile please. Thanks

 

I didn't know +4 was synthetic.

The truck is a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport 4x4 with the Offroad Package, 5.9/360 Magnum V-8 with a 46RE 4spd Auto trans. I will add that here in a second.

As for the grinding it seems to be coming from behind the engine, I would think if it was the transfer case that Id still have some indication of a gear change.

At this point I think a T/C is a lot cheaper than a full on tranny replacement.

 

It still could be the the transfer case, if its shot, you will have no movement or bad sounding movement,noises resonate. And if it is indeed the converter that exploded, the tranny is toast too, and needs to be taken apart and cleaned of the debris from the TC.

 

So in otherwords Im gonna be screwed eitherway then. Well guess Ill have to win big in Vegas this week (Yeah Right) more like waiting till tax time to get it fixed

 

If its the transfer case, it will be be a lot cheaper and easier to replace than having to drop the tranny for a rebuild . You've got some troubleshooting to do.

Sorry to have doubted anyone that said it was a transfer case.

At least that's abit cheaper than a tranny, but tell me, do the transfer cases in our Dodges use gears or is it a chain?

::UPDATE::

Good news..........the Dodge is fixed, new/used transfer case in place. Grinned like a damned Cheshire Cat when I went and got it and was bringing it back. Love my ole Chevy but I can look down on ppl with the Dodge LOL.

Bad News......... it took getting fired and having to cash in my 401 to get it fixed so its one of those Good News/Bad News deals I guess.
