Vacum Leak?

OK, well that was easier than I thought, on the right side of the intake manifold there is a vacuum port that has a line that goes to the firewall, there are 2 check valves on that line. one of those is your problem. the book says you can just unplug them and swap in a new one.

yup, your right on the money. there's a vacuum line that goes thru the firewall to the a/c controller somewhere and there's a check valve that's gone bad. swap that valve out and you'll be good to go.

Since you have the factory manual, do they show the part number(s) for those valves? I'm heading to civilization today and can stop at the Dodge dealer to pick them up.
I once had the same problem, but my check valve was fine. It turned out that the vacuum line that runs along the passenger frame rail next to the exhaust got a tiny hole burned into it by the exhaust. It was about $30 and 20 minutes to fix.
My 98 had the same problem. The solution was replacing the check valve at the intake manifold on the passenger side. Just pull off your check valves, put your lips around the correct end, and inhale. If the valve stops you from pulling air through then it's good. They're five bucks at the dealership.
