Remove the hoses from the water pump, cap the core, and route the hoses back into the pump the way they would have been originally.

Just remove the two hoses from the heater core inlets, then join the two hoses together (two clamps and a piece of pipe), zip tie it down so it will not flap around, no need to plug the inlets as the core is shot.
