Default 4x4 Light and Actuator Question

2001 4x4 sport 5.2L

I have no 4x4 light. When I shift into 4H no light comes on and does not feel like in engages. When I shift into 4L if feels like in engages (jumps when put into drive) but no light comes on and when turning I don't feel any wheel hop like I normally expect.

I just put a new tranny in so I double checked to see If I re-connected the vacuum lines corectly. I did, then I checked the plugs to the transfer case switch in wich I had also hooked up correctly. I followed the lines to the actuator and didn't find any holes or obvious leaks.

From what I understand if the actuator does not slide all the way over the 4x4 and light will not engage. It does look old and rusty so I am assuming my problem lies there. The actuator has about an inch of play North and South is this normal? Is there anything I missed? I am looking for opinions before I drop $100 on a new actuator since I just put a grand into the tranny.

Thanks guys

Edit: I guess I should add I did have the TC tailhouse off to check that clip that holds the shaft in place. The 4x4 worked well a month ago when I used it last, that was the last time I engaged it.

Never hurts to tripple check; I found a big hole on the vacume line above the transer case. problem solved, light comes on 4x4 engages.

Yup, usually a vac problem. Thanks for the update.
