Default Track Bar Replacement

Hello, all. After several months of surfing the forum, decided to join as the advice is dead on. I have a 2000 dodge ram 1500 4x4 and need to replace the Track Bar. Any advice on the process would be greatly appreciated, especially whether i should do it on jacks or leave it on the ground.

I did mine on the ground. Air tools are nice... and a BIG hammer is a requirement. A friend to help is just about required as well....

I pulled the old one, installed the ball stud on the frame side first, and had a friend push/pull on the body to get the bolt lined up on the axle. Took about an hour.

If you don't have a buddy handy to push or pull on the truck to get the bolt lined up a come-a-long works great as your buddy. I have used this method more than once while working by myself.

^^^1 A ratchet strap works good as well, one end to the swaybar tower and the other end to the opposite frame rail.

If you plan to keep the truck for a long time, might want to consider replacing the stock track bar with an adjustable unit and bracket from Solid Steel (http://www.solidsteel.biz/tbk.htm). This will be the last track bar you would ever have to purchase. It's re-engineered to bolt-up without the joint at the frame area, which tends to wear out prematurely.

I bought a moog about a year ago and it already needs replaced. Good thing it's under warranty. You can also turn your steering wheel a little too align it if need be. That's what I did. It's not too bad of a job. The hardest part for me was getting the old one out on the drivers side.

safety tip. on the drivers side ball stud. loosen the nut several rounds of threads, but LEAVE THE NUT ON. then use your pickle fork or BFH to pop it loose.

when it pops off it will do so very suddenly and violently. the nut will keep it in place.

also - do this with the body sitting mostly level, either on the ground or with jack stands under the axle tube. don't do it with the axle hanging or it'll have an ungodly amount of weight hanging on that track bar.

I appreciate the advice, which is why i like this forum. The shop manual is devoid of that one key angle - experience. I'll give it a shot and let you all know how it went.
