Default V10 Engine Troubleshooting

I've got a 97 v10. The guy I bought it from had cut off the cat converter and muffler. The problem is that when I hit about two thousand rpms it acts like I'm getting back compression on the motor. One of my friends says that its because of the exhaust system being too short. I'm just curious what you guys think!

Where does the exhaust end? Where the cat used to be? (bet that's loud.....)

Does the engine lose power over 2K? Or what?

Moved this to the correct forum as well.
