i'm going to rewrite it in sequence and put some punctuation on it. correct me if i'm wrong.

cold engine....
turn ignition to on for the first time - 7 psi.
cycle ignition on/off 3 times - initially reads 55 psi but immediately drops to 5 psi after 3 seconds.
start engine and leave it running - holds a steady 52 psi.

assuming you have no fuel leak spraying fuel all over the ground... i read this as a bad fuel pump. see what others say.

see what merc or hey-you say. fuel pump is expensive.
you might just do the on/off/on/off cycle and drive on.

That is what happened to me having to do the key dance and it was the fuel pump. And dont buy a cheap pump they dont last long i know.

Fuel pump is expensive but if you can afford it fix it. Better then being stranded on a lonley road at -20 F.

If the pump builds the correct pressure, and will run the engine just fine, the problem isn't the pump, its the drain-back valve, that is part of the regulator. Rumor has it you can change JUST that part. Much cheaper than the whole pump.

Here's one..... 115 bucks though.... and you still have to pull the whole pump to change it..... More expensive than I had thought.

Quite frankly, if I were going to go to all that trouble, I would change the whole thing. No point doing the job twice. ('cause ya just know that two weeks after you change that regulator, the pump will die.... right after you fill the tank.....)
