46RE adjusted bands, changed solenoids- now what?
My wife's son's idea of maintenance is when it breaks, fix it. He has a 99 RAM 1500, 5.9 2WD. He had trans problems for years, usually worse when low on fluid or overfilled. Most common problems slow to go in reverse when cold, only shifts to 3rd at high r's and lift off, OD never worked. I read on this forum and others and many seemed to have sucess with changing solenoids flulid and filter and adjust the bands. So I did so, Now reverse and D and L slips pretty bad. I am confident that the front band I did Ok, but question the back band , due to using 9mm socket with shims. So I have to go back into the pan. Some questions the band adjustment instruction refer to different number torque wrenches, which I assume are Chrysler numbers. I am assuming the with any inch/lb wrench with the socket in line with pivot point and 90 degrees with the handle and a short 2 to 3" extension that I can go with the 72 in/lb seetting. I see comments that if the bands are too tight it will chatter and too loose it will slip. I am wondered to correct the slipping even temporarily if I can purposely back off on the number of turns by a 1/4 or half turn, if I may have a more useable vehicle short term. Also I think he had put in Lucus or some other chem fix that I have now washed out. Should I just put more of that in and hope it lasts for a while. Any help may get this thing out of my driveway. Thanks.
Check out MonteC's trans corner thread. Somewhere in there (sorry, long thread) he had a better procedure for band adjustment. Give that a shot, and see what happens. if that doesn't help, Merc's advice is best.
