Default Burnt power steering fluid?

Okay, this is a new issue for me that I've never seen or heard.

'01 1500 5.2L 2WD with about 126k on the clock. Went to turn out of the driveway and there was no steering assist for the first 10-15 seconds. First thing I think of is low fluid. Checked the fluid and it was a little bit low, but not drastically. It was cold last night, but the truck had been idling for 3 minutes or so, so the fluid shouldn't have been *that* cold to not work. But the most confusing thing was that the fluid looked and smelled burnt. Topped it off and away I went, with no real issues but a lot of concerns.

Any one else have this problem? Ever seen this before? How in the world would a PS pump get that hot?

May just be contamination that accumulates over time. Probably wouldn't hurt to flush the system with fresh fluid.
