Default Break In Oil

Break in oil vs. additive? Whats the pros and cons of both, I'm wondering on which one I should get when my motor gets done.

Either will accomplish the same thing. Although, I am not entirely clear on just how necessary it is any more. Most of the break-in issues I have seen were on flat-tappet motors, that like to wipe out cam lobes. Never had an issue with properly lubed cams, in fresh motors, with no additional measures. Our motors have roller lifters.... so, six of one, half-dozen of the other I suppose.

That said.... using it, even though it may not be necessary, is better than not using it, and discovering later that you should have.

As HeyYou has posted not really needed but if you do use some get the oil with it in already. 99% of my motor's have never used a break in oil, the use of proper assy lube when building the motor and proper priming of the oil system is all I have ever done. I have yet to read anyone but me (on DF) that primes there motors oil system before run up, there is a tool for doing this job and it's cheap under $30.

its a good safety issuse although the flat tappet cams are more the issuse , but it diffenitly wont hurt to go that route

Maybe I'll just get some additive then, because we are priming our motors before we run them and I'm getting some assembly lube for my engine too.

i used comp cams break in oil when i built mine. its under 7 a qt from summit. i still have 2 quarts left after everything. i used 2 quarts per container(2 tupperware containers) for the rockers, pushrods, and lifters.

after watching fast n loud on one of their latest episodes, i will never use an additive, ever. they used an additive, and it grenanded the cam, because there wasnt enough zinc in the oil.

There is assy lube and break in oil. Assy lube is used on bearing's, crank journals, roller cam lobes and cam bearings/surfaces, it is a much more viscous type oil that sticks well to parts. The parts he listed can be soaked in oil before assy onto the motor.
