Default Driver's window regulator fix - '96 Ram1500 CC

I used a Dorman 741-753 assembly to replace a broken driver's-side window regulator on my 1996 RAM 1500 Club Cab. The part was very similar to the OEM piece. The OEM unit failed when one of the plastic bearings/bushings in the channel that connects to the clips at the bottom of the window glass cracked. In this respect, the replacement part has made no changes to improve the design (no use of better bushing material, tighter tolerances, etc.) to improve on the failure mode of the original design. Also, the part arrived with one of the bushing/pins not installed in the channel - I had to open the channel up and install the bushing/pin. It wasn't a big deal, but this shouldn't have been approved to ship from Dorman in this condition (this was not the distributor's fault, as the part was sealed in its factory box).

Having been in the door now for the repair and having seen the mechanisms first-hand, I'll be much more careful about trying to use the window in winter until any and all snow/ice has been cleared from it in order to avoid undue strain on the bushings. Another item - the new regulator includes pop-rivets to mount it to the door panel vs. the screws that the original used. I used a metric tap and put threads into the mounting holes on the regulator so that I could use the OEM screws with this (I prefer screws to rivets, anyway). I also swapped the OEM window motor onto this regulator (it fits) to use until it fails at some point, and kept the Dorman motor as a spare (the price difference between the unit without the motor and the unit with the motor wasn't significant). The repair took about 2 hours (the below 0deg F weather didn't help, either).

Same thing happened to me on my Durango. I tried using the electric windows when I didnt realize it was frozen, and it sounds like the same piece broke on mine. I wasn't being an idiot with the switch either, I just tapped it and it snapped off instantly. I think its a combination of the window being frozen and the plastic being brittle in the cold. The dealer wanted $200 for the whole replacement assembly, rails, cables etc and wanted $150 to install it. I bought an aftermarket piece from napa for $100 and did it myself.
