Hey guys my name is Justin Burkett. I just recently bought a 1997 ram sport 5.9. I have been reading a few forums and liked this on so I wanted to join. I was a mechanic for around 8 years, so I know my way around a motor pretty good. I a, now an electrician. So any questions I will do my best to answer. I am looking to get a little more power out of the ol 5.9, I believe its bone stock.
Justin

Maintenance first. And check the plenum. (see the stickied thread at the top of this forum.) Once that is done, for the best "bang for the buck" without actually going into the motor:

SCT Tuner.
Harland Sharp 1.7 ratio roller rockers.
Headers, hi-flow cat, good exhaust.

Pacesetter longtubes would be my choice for starting on the exhaust. You can then either go true dual, (no larger than 2.5",) or a single 3".

Beyond that, better intake manifold, bore the throttle body, better heads.... meaner cam.... all the usual stuff.

Welcome to DF.

x2 on what HeyYou said. I have most of that stuff excluding gears, heads, cam, TB, and the intake. I plan on getting all of that in summer besides the heads.

Fix that dang plenum first though. And welcome to the forum!

Hey thanks guys! Anyone know where I could get an sct for a good price, I've never chipped anything before but my best friend has an edge for is duramax, seems to do good for that truck. I have heard though that chips really don't do a lot for gas motors. I def plan on cold air intake and moving the iat to the cai pipe. I have y pipe back out to fake duals with flow master. This is my first dodge btw. I was also thinking on going all synthetic as well. I've heardthat helps. What's the deal with the plenums on this motor, anything in particular I should watch for? I font see a stickies thread, I'm still learning my way around df. Also I'm going to switch to the autolite plugs. Sorry this is all jumbled I'm on my phone.

"Chips" do nothing. You want a real tuner. Something that actually updates the programming in the PCM, not a resistor in the IAT line. (which is all those chips are. Snake oil.)

For tuners, talk to Hemifever at Hemifever tuning. He is the accepted "best" for our trucks.

CAI will do nothing for you either. It draws air from the exact same spot the stock system does. It might flow a bit better, but, that is something you would only notice a difference on a dyno. And only at HIGH RPM to boot. Spend the money elsewhere. A good free-flowing filter is a much better option. Leave the IAT sensor where it's at as well.
