Default 97 Dodge Ram 1500 - Stuck in 2nd

Alright. Had shifting issues.

I had code P-1571 or something like that. It dealt with the governor pressure solenoid. So I dropped the pan (fluid was bad - bit burnt and real dark and thick), let it drain overnight. Pulled the solenoid and sensor out. Replaced them. Put it all back together. Refilled with fluid (For those wondering, letting it sit overnight I had to add 6.5 L back). Disconnected battery for 20 min, re attached.

And yadda yadda yadda. did all of the exercises to ensure proper fluid levels.

First drive was fine. Second start up was good until it went to shift from 2nd -> 3rd. It slipped into neutral.

Now I can wrestle it down to 1st after coming to a stop (sometimes it drops down by itself, sometimes I have to shift through the gears to get it to drop) , and 1st -> 2nd is smooth as butter. But it cannot hit 3rd. Slips into neutral every time.

So whats up? PLEASE HELP!! I need 3rd gear.

What does your fluid look like now?

I suspect that it's rebuild time.......

How dare you speak those words!

We are no longer friends. Ha.

Yah, I kinda figured. Didn't want to ever admit that time had come.

Any idea of what I could be looking at price wise? And what about switching to manual. What kind of hefty cost would that bring?

You can get rebuilds anywhere from 900, to 1600 bucks. New transmissions range anywhere from 1200 to over 4 grand. (mega viper, the last trans you would ever need, runs around 2500) Junkyard prices (used trans....) are all over the place. A lot depends on what is available in your area. Call around to various shops, and see what they have to say.

There are a couple threads on here for manual trans conversions. Prices vary, depending on availability of parts. Finding a whole truck with a blow motor, or trashed body, is the best way to go. Lots o' work though.

And, just for a bit of wisdom:

The bearer of bad news should keep one foot in the stirrup.

With dark, burnt fluid and no 3rd gear the front clutch is gone.
