Sounds like it's working OK. With the CAD off check that there isn't any play in the axles. There's a bearing or bushing on the intermediate axle just to the left of the CAD opening, and a plastic bushing between the axles where they join. If either of them are worn, the axles will be misaligned causing engagement problems or not engaging at all.
