hughes performance intake and big gulp throttle body
Is this worth the money for the possible mpg and hp increase? Also is there anyone that can tune or mod an ecu for a 96 5.2 automatic running all 01 transmission internals and electeonics?
Hello! Please do not post in the general Ram section, please choose the appropriate subsection/generation to post in.

I just installed the hughes air gap this past Mon. currently its a huge difference but my plenum was blown pretty bad. Going to fill up tomorrow see how the mpg is. In the past its about 11.8mpg. hp increase definatly there no longer need to press harder to go uphill. New thermostat at 180 engine running cooler now old one was clogged up and slight leak.
Ill post when i fill up.

If you have a built engine to take advantage of the intake manifold and throttle body then yes it can work. Will you notice increased fuel economy? If you can keep your foot out of it maybe??
Built engine is new heads with larger valves, headers & free flowing exhaust, camshaft, roller rockers, higher compression pistons and then once you have the engine all put back together you're going to need a rebuilt transmission.
The tranny needs to be able to handle the increased power. And then now that it is running you will need a tuner to make it run right.
Since you have a 96 you can't use a tuner from Hemifever so you're going to have to contact B&G Performance. They are the only company I know of that can tune a build OBD 1 engine.
You can still us the Air Gap or a M1 intake and just run a smaller throttle body with good results. You still need some mods to support the intake but not as extreme. Headers and H&S adjustable roller rockers in a 1.7 ratio would be a good start. These magnum engines don't like large amounts of air without serious work.

I saw small incremental increases with each of the mods I have, and whilst each did have their effect, it is not until they all come together that you get the real benefits... but by that time, you've kind of lost the feel for how you started out.
I still have the H&S1.7's to go for my basic build list.
Getting away from the bad plenum was probably the biggest MPG gain, but like mentioned above, any MPG gain will be lost if you revel in the power gains.
I recently switched to 93oct and the matching tune... yes, more power, but to my surprise, with sedate driving, better MPG (partially offsetting the higher price at the pump).
I started out in the 10's for MPG, and am now sniffing at 14MPG... with more power to play with if needed.

Alright well i filled up today. mpg is now 15.7 so big increase but my plenum was really bad so i am sure that helped. It was sucking a qt of oil every 200miles. Other upgrades already on include voolant cold air intake, flow master exhaust and cat. Plugs distributor cap, rotor, and wire set just replaced past summer. Longtube headers are next.
