how do i identify the fill and drain plug locations on the tranny?
99 ram, 1500, 2wd, 5.2L, 5-speed manual trans.
I have searched the forums and read through various posts, but I'm still unable to determine what tranny is in my truck and how to identify the fill and drain plugs. I'm hoping to solve this today so I can do a fluid change over the weekend. As best I can detrmine at this time is that it's the NV3500 judging by a PDF document I found in one of the DIY threads.
Can anyone confirm the drain and fill plug locations?

So... do you have an auto or manual tranny? That's really the only important info besides the year. If it's a manual, its am NV3500. If auto, it's a 46RE. Drain plugs are on the bottom for obvious reasons, and fill plugs are on the side, IIRC the passenger side.
it's a five speed manual trans. i see several bolts, or resessed hex plugs and wanted to be careful not to remove the wrong one. on the passenger side of the tranny, is a resessed hex plug at the bottom and within a few inches above that is the exact same type of plug. the drivers side has a couple of bolts i think along with the slave cylinder and the reserver light switch.

Yup, I just did my fluid a few weeks ago. They're 17mm or 1/2"(I believe that is the conversion) hex keys. I have a small transfer pump that I got from Walmart for like $5, works wonders for tranny's. I used just under 2L of Castrol ATF+4.

got it changed!
picked up two qt's of valvoline synchromesh and a hand pump and 17MM hex socket, 1/2 drive from Autozone for $12. It actually came with two other sizes as well.....
pulled fill plug
pulled drain plug (drain plug was completely full of dark grey junk and lots of metal shavings. fluid was dark brown).
cleaned both plugs and re-inserted the drain plug. used a small amount of teflon tape around the threads.
opened the hood of the truck and positioned the oil bottle with the attached hand pump and ran the other end of the hose into the fill port. primed the pump, tipped the oil can over and let gravity do the rest. took a few minutes and all but just a few ounces of fluid.
re-inserted the fill plug
DONE!
over all a very simple job and less than the cost of a regular oil change.
on to the differential fluid change next.
