Default Fuel Problems...

I thought I posted this but I can't see the message. So I am sorry if this is doubled. My question is about the fuel line connection on the fuel pump. It is double sided plastic clip style. The manual says "not serviceable". So now that it is off am I thinking I need to replace the fuel line? Am I missing an o ring or gasket? I had a coughing and stalling engine. I got the bed lifted as the tank is 1/2 full. When my son keyed the ignition nothing happened. I tapped the top of the pump, on the filter, and it started and spewed black colored fuel. It is clear (amber) now. But the connector does not seal...?...Thanks for your time...

I think those are fairly standard sized o-rings for sealing in there, you might be able to simply replace them. Or, most parts stores carry a 'repair' end for the fuel line to replace that whole connector. You basically splice a new one onto the fuel line.

Might not hurt to pull the pump, drain the tank, drop it, and clean everything out good though..... Just a thought.

Do you think the pump is shot? It used to make noise a few months ago when the key was set to on, before ignition. Now it doesn't, but, as soon as I go to crank the engine the pump comes to life and sprays fuel everywhere...the reason I wonder about the connector failure. I had too many close calls where it outright died, I hate to put fate into this pump. Thanks for the help. I have a local shop that will dispose of the fuel. I plan on pumping it out and cleaning the tank. I lifted the bed instead of trying to drop a tank with about 150 pounds of fuel in it, (I have to work in a driveway and she rests right in the spot you see her in my picture). The good part about the bed being off is that I can run a new brake line without laying on the ground getting rust and dust in my face. Oh and I think my filler neck is shot, perhaps why I may have gunk in my tank...Cheers and have a good weekend.

If you don't trust the pump, go ahead and replace it. It isn't going to get any easier than it is right now. May not hurt to blow out the fuel line, and clean the fuel rails as well. Get a delphi, or denso pump. Skip the airtex, unless you want to do this again in about a year.

Not sure if you can find another filler neck..... if it doesn't leak, and is clean on the inside, well... that one is up to you. LMC Truck may have new ones.

Thanks Hey You....My local NAPA has the filler neck for $75. I heard about the Airtex pump being crap so I am going to stay away from that. From what I am gathering the plastic fuel line is not serviceable so I may need to throw a new one on. How dirty is dirty for the inside of the tank? I got a primer bulb and got all the gas out of the tank. I wiped down the bottom and inside and got less than just dingy deposits. Nothing really gritty, rust-like or anything. The 17 gallons I pumped out of the tank were clear and amber and I used some in my mower. I am sure this is an original pump so I am going with that must be the weak link. Might do some extra "pre fail" maintenance while the bed is off on other stuff like old brake lines. A lot easier than laying down under all the sand and rust...Thanks again...

If you can wipe a rag around inside the tank, and it doesn't come out filthy, should be golden. You can get it as clean as you want. (with as much effort as you care to put into it.) But, there is the point of diminishing returns. Maybe some peace of mind to be had, but, it really doesn't need to be clean enough to eat off of.
