Reman 46RE - Where to get & How much?
.
Since buying our '98 Ram this summer, we have gradually dumped money into the auto tranny more and more, only to finally find out that it has toasted clutches and is shot, needing either a rebuild or replacement. I asked the tech at our local stealership, and he says that a reman would have a 3yr warranty, versus a 1yr on a rebuild. With the rep these trannies have, I think a 3yr one would be a good thing. Plus, a remove and replace would be cheaper than a rebuild too.
Now, we need to find a reman tranny for the best price, so we can get rid of our current slipping one and be able to use our truck again. Just wanted to see where others have gotten theirs from and what they paid.
Still pissed at DC for such a POS tranny.

I've seen reman trannys on E-bay for around $800, and APS Precision makes a few different versions including a beefed up one. If you want your tranny to last, there's a few things you should do. First and foremost, install a shift kit. It'll cut down on wear and heat build-up and will fix the poor oiling to the overdrive unit that plauges these trannys. Second is installing a tranny cooler. Two other things that are optional, but very helpful, are installing a deeper pan and a tranny temp gauge.
.
Thanks Ramtuff! Good info to know. Definately want the next one to last. The first should have lasted longer than 56K!! I'll look and see if APS Precision has a website. I assume a tranny shop would do the ordering, in order for any warranty to be available.
I have wanted to get one of those A-pillar pod thingys and have a tranny temp gauge for a while now. Guess this is a good reason to justify one. Our truck has a tranny cooler.

I'd go with the aps precision tranny... get one that is beefed up and it'll never let you down. then add a big tranny cooler.

Avoid the APS OEM crate tranny, it's cheaper than the stealership, but it's the same OEM junk without the stealer markup. Get one custom built. http://www.apsprecision.com/Transmission.html

I haven't researched much on these trannys but everyone loves Dans throttle bodies so you may give him a call about these transmissions. A 46RE designed to hold up to 700 hp. That should hold for what you are doing. If I ever have problems I'm gonna give him a call.
