The compatibility information seems to be different everywhere. Summit lists it only for la engines up to 1991, but where I bought mine on ebay it was listed all the way through the production of the magnums. I did find in my How to Rebuild Your Mopar V8 book it says that the magnums used a one size smaler cam key than the la engines so the cam sprocket is not interchangeable.

I just sent an email to Cloyes asking if the C3028X timing set will work. I will let everyone know what they say about it.

That's good hear, so myself and others shouldn`t have any problems using this timing set.

Hughes engines also lists the camshaft keys differently for magnum and la engines. I would recommend spending a few more dollars and getting the mopar performance timing set to play it safe. Maybe theres two versions of the 3028x and I got the wrong one?

Great, will be quizzing the mechanic who did my timing set and plenum. They installed it somehow! The only thing I've noticed after 1500 miles is less oil consumption and my usually very white spark plugs (stock champions) are now showing some color/like a carbon film on just one side of the center of plugs. I figured that was from stopping the plenum leak, but maybe not. Will wait to see what Ram Driver finds out from Cloyes.

Ya you probably noticed that from the plenum. I could easily see the play in the gear not being noticed when your trying to put it on while the engines is in the truck. I hardly noticed it with my engine right in front of me on a stand. And here is where I first read about the gears not being interchangeable. The book is written by a Chrysler engineer.

There were A engines/ LA engines and the magnum. So I guess that doesn't confirm to me whether the C3028x can or cannot be used in a magnum series engine. It seems clear that magnum and an A engine cannot use the same timing set.

I emailed Hughes and this is what they said. I think it should work by what they said.

The timing sets are the same.
The magnum key is SHORTER (which some people would call smaller)
I'm sure that can be confusing.
We offer the same timing sets for flat-tappet (LA-style) and roller (Magnum-type)

Ok, case closed. But had I known then what I know now, I would've opted for the next step up to a .250 roller part 9-1103 I think, from Cloyes. The parts guy at the O store just assumed I wanted the cheapest double roller. And lesson learned on my part. Don't assume any thing! Thanks for helping to clear this up.
