Default Transmission Swap

To start off, I believe my trans is toast. I have a 98 dodge ram 1500 318 4WD 46RE. It started this past weekend, and its hard to describe whats happening. It seems that in every gear, the idle is not staying steady, it moves roughly 400rpm up and down, and the overdrive don't seem to engage. It was running round 3000 rpm at 55, and there was very little power. So I am going to drop my dads trans out of his 2001 dodge ram 1500 360 and put it in mine. It was rebuilt I think roughly 30k miles ago. The trans should be alright, but it was always pulling something and it had to turn 37" tires. I was going to drop the pan and change fluid and filter and I had considered getting the upgraded governor pressure solenoid, but I don't know jack about transmissions. Can anyone comment on this and post pictures of the governor solenoid? There is a good DIY post on this by xray99, but the pictures aren't showing up. I just want it to last as long as possible. I considered the sonnax kit, but my head hurts just reading that one. Thanks for any help

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think the 01 trans will work something with the overdrive solenoids

Pinout for the connectors is the same, but, I think the connector itself is different. Could solve that by installing correct year electronics into the 01 trans. That might require a couple parts off the older trans, but, just for the governor sensor/solenoid. (it's easy, and obvious. )

Sooo, just take all the electronics off the 01 and put them on the 98? Then everything should work correctly? Should I worry bout putting the upgraded governor solenoid in it?

Use the electronics for the year of truck you are installing the trans into. Upgrades are up to you..... putting in all new isn't going to get any easier though, and is good for peace of mind.

Ok, so it has taken awhile, but the trans is in. I ended up having to pay a guy 300 bucks because i just dont have the time to do it, and to be brutually honest, dont know what the hell im doing. It shifts alright, but it seems like when i get on it, it takes longer to shift then it should. The shifts are nice and soft....like a junk dodge. And the trans temp light and OD Off light are stuck on, along with not shifting into overdrive. It shifts in, but its like it is stuck in towing mode. Not to mention, he said its a little low on fluid because i didnt have enough in my truck, and it overheated like none other on the way home. So its simply a basket case of problems. Any help with these would be MUCH appreciated

Did he put the right electronics in the trans? Or did he just slap it in, and call it good?

Need to adjust your TV cable. (sloppy shifts, holding gears too long) If that doesn't help... may need to change sensors in the trans.

What year trans did you install?

He slapped it in. It was an 2001 46RE mated to a 360. Mine was a 46RE mated to a 318. He said he could easily put the overdrive solenoid from my old trans into my new trans. But I don't really want to put a part from a trashed trans into a "not" trashed trans and id really prefer to stop spending money!!! stupid truck...

I think the connectors are different starting in 2000. So, the PCM isn't getting some of the signals it expects. Swapping to the older electronics is doable, but, you will need some parts from the valve body of your old trans to mount them. (that changed too.)
