Default Will a 45RFE transmission replace a 42RH in a 2001 1500?

My 17 YO son has his 1st truck, a 2001 Ram 1500 Laredo, Crew cab with 318 CU In engine and 2WD. He blew the tranny and we have found a 2001 45RFE from a Durango. What would we have to do to make it work?
Thx

IIRC it will not bolt up. The electronics are different to so I dont know if it would even work hooked up. A 318 should have a 46RE transmission, not a 42RH. Even then it should be a 42RE, not 42RH. A lot more electronics got added in somewhere from 96-98, and it became different enough to warrent a new name or title or whatever youd like to call it haha. I would get the transmission rebuilt instead of doing a JY install. That way if something goes wrong with the new trans it should be covered instead of being SOL with a JY trans. Know what I mean? Hopefully that helps you out some.

BTW, its SLT Laramie, Laredo is Jeeps

The 45rfe is a completely different transmission found behind the 4.7 and the later 5.7 Hemis. It will not bolt up behind your 5.2 Magnum engine.

The 46re is generally rebuildable and there's a very good list of improvements to be made to it that can be found on page 6 of this sticky at the top of the forum.

Most transmission shops will see you coming. You drive a dodge, after all. These transmissions are notorious for crapping out, but if you rebuild it with the suggested improvements it will probably outlast the rest of the truck.

If you go the JY route, find a 2000 or 2001 2wd ram or 5.9l 2wd Durango. The 4x4 models have different tail housings and wont bolt up without extensive tear downs and replacement of parts. The 99 and earlier models have different electronics than your 01 and will again give you fits after you have it all bolted in- it will bolt in, but not plug in. 2002 was a generation change and will again give you some fits making it work.

Should you decide to keep and rebuild it, also check out the plenum sticky at the top of the forum as well.

2002 1500 are different but a 46re out if a 2002 2500/3500 5.9 gas auto will work

Thanks, everyone, for your response. We appreciate the education.
Money is the big issue. Can afford to rebuild at this point.

This is wrong!!!
Difference between RH and RE models is the RE is electronic governor and RH is hydraulic governor, has nothing the do with how overdrive is engaged.
95 and earlier are RH and the 96 and later are RE. The electronics did change after 99.
