Default Rear Axle Assembly

Couple of questions for you guys ---

Rear axle assemblies (4x4, 3.55) from the 1994-2001 years - are they interchangeable from year to year? Basically, can I use a 2001 assembly in a 1995 Ram?

Does anyone from the forum have any experience with purchasing used assemblies (or other) from autopartsfair.com? This is a farm truck and I really don't want to put $$$$ in to it if there are other options.

Any help you can give in answering these questions are much appreciated.

Yes, they are interchangeable from year to year. The trick for the smoothest swap is to ensure that the rear has the same gear ratio, the rear axle is of the same type and the brake setup is the same (drum or disc). Most RAM 1500 trucks use Dana 44 rear axles with drum brakes. My RAM 2500 4x4 uses a Dana 60 rear axle with 8 lug wheels.

When you have a moment, please update your profile with information about your truck (year, make, model, 4x4 or 2WD, general location, etc.).

Actually all the 94-01 1500s used a Chrysler 9.25 axle.

But they all interchabge basically.

Was yours a newer axle going in an older truck? Nearer being 97ish. Because they have a tone ring in the rear axle for
Your Speedo.

No worries if your going back though, it will just be unplugged.

I'll give you the carrier and ring & pinion free if you're near Nashville TN. Let me know. It's from a 96 1500 4x4.

All the 2nd gen trucks had the sensor on the rear axle. They just changed the programming in the PCM around 98, to eliminate the VSS on the output of the trans/t-case. (2 or 4 wd.)
