If you look at your heads you can see which valve goes to an intake port or and exhaust port. On our engines they valves are setup as follows. From the front of the engine Exhaust/Intake-Intake/Exhaust-Exhaust/Intake-Intake/Exhaust. This is one head on one side. It is laid out the same on the other side.

Need to have something in the cylinder to hold the valves closed. Can use high pressure air, or, a length of rope. (for air, just run the cylinder to TDC, and apply pressure. for rope, get is most of the way there, stuff the rope in, then run it to TDC. Dropping a valve into the cylinder sucks. )

If you can't compress the valve spring enough to get the keepers out, re-set your spring compressor, and try again. It's an easy job, just tedious. (10 bucks in parts, 7-9 hours in labor.....)
