exhaust questions for california smog...
yep if its cheap, its not legal here in CA. There's no way around it, if it doesn't say online CA approved Don't buy it or you will be taking it off when it fails smog later on. If you found a CAT that is approved in CA for $450, jump on it. when i was looking for a different vehicle, smaller vehicle even, it was around $800 for the CA ones.
I would love to move out of cali however that is not going to happen as soon as I would like...
I only have one cat...I wouldnt think I would have to get 2 cats for a replacement...in anycase I have seen the magnaflow direct fit but I was hoping I can find something that is slightly bigger pipe than the magnaflow...its a 2" and I was hoping I can do something in 2.5"
If there is no way around it then ill settle for the magnaflow...main reason im looking at changing the pipe size is the jba headers Im looking at the collector size is 2.5" so I really want to try to stay with that but again if I cant...I cant
With that being said would I be able to use a universal cat and have an offroad y? It wont affect the truck or nothing the only thing im qorried about is would it pass? Saying the cat is for CA

For that, you would have to ask the folks that do the inspections. You *might* be able to get away with it, but, I live on the other side of the country, and California smog laws are a mystery to me.
But, if you can, the off-road y-pipe with a cat spliced into would be a great solution.

Sorry its taking so long to get to a smog station ive been jammed at work lately. Hopefully I can get by there today if I can remember.
But one of my coworkers told me that as lo g as I have a carb certified cat with an eo number I should be fine regardless if its direct fit or universal but ill check that today hopefully.

I talked to a smog guy today andvsaid that it does not matter what cat you have as long as the EO number matches the model vehicle
My question now is...is there a universal cat I can use for my truck with a matching eo number?
To me its looking like a direct fit is the only way to go in california...

I found this which lists all approved cats for all vehicles in ca
"https://ssl.arb.ca.gov/PartsSearchTool/CatalystSearchTool.aspx"
When I search for a cat it showsva test group name...where can I find that for my truck?
