440 swap in 01 dodge ram
Okay guys I'm planning on doing a motor swap in my 2001 dodge ram 1500 it has 5.9 360 in it and I have replaced axles with 3/4 ton axles and put 3/4 ton spring under it as well. I want to do a 440 swap but what all would I have to do as well as it will need to pass ga state emissions. Will prob get a efi kit but want to know if that is possible
Try doing a search as this is a question that comes up 3-4 times each month. It is not going to be an easy swap and is going to take a ton of fabrication so if you can't do that kind of stuff on your own plan on paying.
EFI kit? Maybe a universal kit but I don't know that I have ever seen a EFI kit for the 440.

A lot of people have attempted this swap but only 1 that I know of has completed it and it was for offroad use only. You would need custom mounts, tranny?, custom rad, custom wiring, emissions, etc. Depending on budget and purpose (power?) I would personally do a 488 v10/47re swap or stroke your 360 to a 408. A 408 magnum would eats the pants off of your typical carbed 440. Benefits of the 408 is that you don't have to mess with wiring, pass emissions, mileage is better than 440, lots of power.
If you want to do a swap do it. You are just gonna have to figure it out because I don't think anybody on this forum has ever tried it or had the funds to do so.
I live in west ga and have emissions. And 488 is a choice. Maybe a 6bt cummins?

I've never had a 408 so I can't judge but I used to have a 76 440 4 barrel in my old mud truck and I wasnt that impressed. I think it had 260 horsepower. The high output 440's from the late 60s early 70s with the 6 pack may be a different story but they cost quite a bit more and it's still an old motor with a carb that probably needs a rebuild soon. I may be wrong but doesn't the 408 come close in horsepower #s to that of the HO 440 at 390hp?
8.0L 488 is the v10 magnum engine. Came in 2500 and 3500's. Produces 300hp and 450ft/lb of torque from the factory. My old mans got one and it is one bad mother******!!!!! Problem with them is there is not as much aftermarket support (still some!) and they are heavy.
You just have to build the 408 the right way and you will have a stump busting small block that Will be reliable with fuel injection. And more or less just bolt in it to your existing platform.
