Solenoid getting weak perhaps, or, governor pressure not high enough. (which would be either the sensor, or the solenoid.) You can replace ALL the electronics in the trans for about 200 bucks, plus fluid/filter. Adjust the bands should you elect to go there.

To the OP:

I bet the issue lies in the PCM, it thinks its shifting a 46RE and really shifting a 44RE. Both transmissions are similar in look but, are geared differently.

Default More Problems

My truck won't shift past Second unless I shift into N then back to D. But it doesn't pull well after that. 1st and 2nd pull fine. Also Reverse is jumpy like it's trying to grab, but just can't get a grip. So basically, Drive, OD, and Reverse are going away. It all happened suddenly the other morning when I tried to back out of the drive. Any insight? I've had nothing but trans problems since the first one blew. This is 3. I'm considering just selling the SOB, but I'd like a good diagnosis first.

What are you replacing them with? How long since the last replacement/rebuild? Fluid look good?

Most importantly, what year is your truck?

99 4x4 with a 360. The first one came with the truck, and lasted about a year. The second was 46re out of same model, but 2000 year. Both overheated due to a clog in the radiator. This one came out of a 99 Durango 4x4 with a 318. This one has lasted about six months. It's always shifted kind of funny between 2nd, and Drive, but won't shift at all now unless manually shifted up to Neutral then back to Drive. But it doesn't pull well. Reverse is weak, and jumpy. The fluid is a little dark, but not bad.

Your last trans was probably a 44RE...... which would explain why it didn't live long.

No warranty on used trans I would imagine...... So, you get a choice.... you can get another used one.... and gamble on how long it will last, or, you could rebuild one, and stuff it in, (or pay someone else to do it...) or, you could put a megaviper in, and never worry about it again...... (expensive) or, you could just replace the whole truck.

As of right now I'm choosing door number 3. I love the truck. It's got an 8 inch lift. 37 in super swampers. Bull bar with hidden front hitch. Nerf bars, and all the bells and whistles, but it's just time for it to go. I'm throwing it out on CL, and hoping for the best. Thanks.

No wonder the last trans didn't last.......

Megaviper would end your problems, and you could keep the truck.

True, but that's waaay out of my price range. I didn't give that much for the truck. Lol. I was hoping there was some secret adjustment, or magic sprinkles to remedy this problem on a budget, but I need something more practical anyway. It's too tall to pull my 5th wheel. Or see what's in the bed. So I'm just gonna sell it.

Fix it by replacing every part. That works too.
