Default Transmission queries

Here about a week ago my trans started whining while I'm accelerating so I decided today to go ahead and check the fluid level.
Took a drive and let it get up to temperature then stopped and left it in neutral and checked the fluid about 4 Times to be sure and it is at the minimum level.

So my questions are
1. How much fluid do I need to add to get it to the correct level?
2. Any ideas on why my trans started whining? It shifts normal and behaves as it always has.

Thanks for any help!

Truck is a 1998 1500 5.2 auto

Definitely wouldn't hurt to drop the pan and inspect things.......

A bit premature to drop pan....just yet.

Hey Nate, you were checking the fluid correctly. It's a bugger on checking the fluid and I add about 1/2 quart at a time. I'd recommend that you target the max hash line, but it's ok to get up to the wave/spring portion on the stick too.

Try to be sure you have the truck on level ground too.
You are using ATF+4 right?

The whine also goes down when coasting, right?

More to come based on your feedback.

Yes ATF+4, and the whine isn't noticeable when I'm coasting.
Truck was on level ground

So yes, the whine goes down or decreases in decibel when coasting (off throttle). This indicates it's aligned with drivetrain speed and not rpm.

Did you get it back to fluid level?

I'm thinking you got low on fluid, it heated up, and the whine is the result. Can it be resolved, I've got no idea.

You say it shifts and drives fine still.
