Question 1998 dodge ram 1500 leaking ATF

Ive seen some ATF fluid coming from my transfer case right where it meets the tranny, transmission fluid isnt low and its leaked for a while since before I bought it and made a black sludge on the plate below the transfer case, any ideas on what it could be and if its a one man DIY job?also how much would this cost to have a mechanic do it?

T-case uses atf as well. Check fluid level in the case.

Back of tcase has 2 plugs, to be accessed with an allen wrench. Bring a flashlight. Pick the upper one to unscrew. With truck parked level, the fluid should be just to the fill hole.

You can see it in this picture just below the ID tag.

It can be a pain in the booty, but it's probably just time to replace the seal on the tranny output shaft and the input side of the tcase itself.

I'd gather a couple hundred for a shop to do it. But if you are mechanically inclined, have the time and tools, it can be done at home.
