Default Spare tire winch

Hi all,

Purchased a new to me 2001 Ram 1500 quad cab 4x4 5.9 short bed not too long ago and have been getting it road worthy.

I picked up a 16" alloy wheel from the junk yard so I'd have a matching spare.. I already had a set of 245 75 16 tires to put on.

some of you can sense what is comming ... wait for it.

So silly me did not try putting an alloy wheel under the truck before I bought a rim. The end of the spare tire winch is too wide to fit through the center hole of the AL rim. Who comes up with this stuff? So I'm thinking of 1) cutting the holder so I fits the rim or 2) drilling it out to install some wheel studs so I can attach the rim with lug nuts and drill then end of the stud so I can put a cotter pin in to keep the lugs and rim from falling off.

Anyone done this before?

i would opt for what will be easiest to remove sometime down the road when its cold and dark and you've forgotten about this.

how much too big is the winch plate that prevents it from going through the center hole? a little or a lot.
does the plate disengage from the cable or is it crimped on?

option 1 for me would be to cut down the diameter of the plate using a angle grinder while on the truck or bench grinder if off the truck.

option 2 - a friends truck had this cable break and fall off and get lost. i fixed it by using a couple of cable clamps around a piece a scrap flat bar. the bar was about 8 inches long. since it was flat and the cable was flexible, you could stick it through the hole and then turn it crossways to hold the wheel.
