Lots of folks do, but, it really isn't the best solution. If you are hauling a rather heavy load, (I would think north of around 4500 pounds) I suspect it won't handle it as well as a longer wheelbase truck would. But then, running what ya got, and being careful, is still cheaper than another truck.

I used mine to relocate from PA to S.FL... the bed was full, the passenger seat was full, and I was toeing a tandem car trailer with a neon that was also full to the roof.
Well beyond all normal vehicle limits, but it handled the task (with some cautious driving)... I'm sure having a manual transmission didn't hurt.

PS; This was before any mods... a totally stock 3yr old truck.

I've got a 96 1500 reg cab/short bed 4x4 5.2/auto. I'll sometimes load the bed with camping gear and flat tow a 46 ****** Jeep (Jeep weighs about 3500 lbs.) with the overdrive off of course. The truck is working hard and you have to be paying attention the whole time. It wouldn't be my first choice if I had to do it on a regular basis, but like someone else alluded to you've gotta run with what you've got.

Use one to tow a couple light trailers, yes. Use one for a "tow rig", no. Figured it was better in the long run to get a truck meant to haul, instead of a half ton gasser.
