That sounds a lot like an electric clutch, or solenoid..... it only does it once.... (every now and then...) which is going to make it VERY fun to find.

It isn't the purge solenoid is it? Or maybe EGR solenoid? (only if your truck is 95 or older for that one.)

I went around the entire engine and re-torqued every bolt. Couple of the intake manifold bolts were only at 5-7ft lbs some reason so i turned them back to 12ft lbs. Everything looks fine. Nothing else loose.

I have determined the noise is coming directly from under the intake manifold. T-stat was changed. Could the plenum plate be making the noise somehow? I torqued the bolts to spec with blue loctite when I did it. The noise didn't start until about 3 1/2 months after the repair. It doesn't seem to affect anything, its just annoying.
What are the odds you left something in the lifter valley ? It can happen . Any unaccounted for bolts when you did the plenum ? Even that's a stretch . Speaking of stretch , anyone think a stretched timing chain would do it ? How many K ? Tried the stethoscope/screwdriver to the ear to hear the sound yet ? Think that would be my next move .

You may be on to something with the t-stat but I've never heard it before . What brand did you use ? If a failsafe , I'd swap it .

like i said would pull the t-stat out and run it without a t-stat and see if it does it at all, if it doesnt then i guess u know why. replace it.

i dont see anything else that would be causeing it in that area. just sayin
