Default transmission swap

I have a 2001 Dodge ram with 2wd that has the 5.2 in it. I found a transmission out of a 4wd 2007 ram and I was wondering if it would work. The main reason I want to swap it out is because the band went bad and I would need to do a full over haul If I wanted to fix it the right.(Or at least thats what all of the transmission shops that I went to said.) So I guess the question is, do I do the tranny swap or just attempt to do a rebuild myself? I have no prior knowledge of transmissions either. Thanks for any help

Nope. Output shafts are different. You would need to basically tear the trans all the way down to make it work, so, might just as well rebuild yours.

Now, you *might* be able to swap the O/D units from the 2wd, to the 4wd trans, and make it work... but, not sure on that.

HeyYou,
You missed the biggest NO NO in the question. 2001 truck w/5.2 and wanting to swap a tranny from a 2007 truck. Not the same engine, computers or anything else. None of this would make the swap easier. You'd be better off to swap the engine and tranny if that was the tranny you wanted.

Can you rebuild it yourself? If you know nothing at all about transmissions then trying to rebuild your 46RE might not be the best choice. If you look in the DIY section you can find a thread about rebuilding the tranny. Read it and see what you think.

I think the bellhousing bolts up the same.

But it's a moot point becuase of the electronics and computer controlling of new trans and stuff.

Ooops, you are correct Sir! Missed the mismatch in years there.

And no, I think bellhousing bolt pattern is different as well.
