On my '95 D2500 I would click it 'Off' when towing heavy.

If I was towing the boat (18' Lund aluminum) I didn't bother to turn it off, but if I had the 12K deck over trailer and a load, I turn off the OD.

On my newer trucks, I use the 'Tow/Haul' mode, which is a similar function.

It resets every time you turn off the ignition, so if towing and you stop for gas/lunch/etc. remember to push it again when you restart the rig.

Oh, as to what it's for, it locks out the OD, so the trans will not go into OD.

Good for towing and climbing long grades at highway speeds.

So your truck will automatically want go into overdrive when you get up to speed UNLESS you push the OD button. When it is lit up, it means it WILL NOT go into overdrive (or it will take you out of overdrive if you're already there). You've got a three speed automatic tranny plus an overdrive. When you're cruising at highway speeds and you want to "downshift" to third you can push in the OD button and it will take you out of overdrive and drop you down to third gear.

If you aren't towing/hauling anything, you can leave O/D alone. (I only turn it off if I have a fairly substantial load, or trailer)

If you've got it in 4WD high you should also turn off the OD, as you probably shouldn't be going fast anyways (because of the reason you're in 4WD high in the first place i.e.: snowy roads).
