Default Heater Failure

My '95 heater has stopped working. Here in Cleveland Ohio, that is a big deal. It will blow marginally warm air, but nothing like it should. I drove it 60 miles the other day and nothing. I also noticed that the temp gauge only moves a small amount, even after a long drive. Are these things connected somehow? The gauge is not more than 2 years old and the thermostat is new. The coolant is full. Any ideas?

if coolant is full , and the heater core isn't leaking(all over your floor) and the fact your gauge doesnt get up to temp, my guess would be your t stat is stuck open. even though it is new, it can be defective.

If you bought one of the failsafe stats, you now know why folks here don't recommend them.

Verify no air in the cooling system, since the heater core is generally above the engine block. Next check the temperature of the heater hoses they should be hot to the touch. I'm pretty sure the heater hoses bypass the thermostat giving the occupants warm cabin air on cold days as soon as possible.

If the heater hoses are cool or you can squeeze the hoses with no pressure I think you might have air in the system.

As I understand it, there's two different types of temp sensors; a single pin and a two pin make sure you have the right one. To be clear this is the sensor at base of the intake manifold on the pax side.

The t stat is stuck open. Replace it with a stant superstat. Drill a small hole(1/8) in the body of it. This will allow the air to escape when filling the system.

Great idea, I never thought of that. Thanks for sharing.
