I tried adjusting the bands on my 99 Ram 4x4. Well the problem is I didn't look really well at where the lock nut was. All I have is cheapo inch pound tourque wrench when I tried to get 72 in pounds it never would tighten up so I tried to set it to pre adjustment but there is hardly any thread left. I tried going both was till there was a lot of thread sticking out pretty sure this is loosening it. All of this was done by hand just a 9mm 1/4 inch on a extension. I started on the 2nd one and didn't do the first band cause I was scared I had screwed up. When I filled it with fluid it now clunks in gear and as you let off at speed it will slow the truck as if the brake is applied. It shifts smooth and clean accelerates good. Just the deceleration bothers me. At 40-70 it will coast when you let off and reapplied throttle is clean. Anyone know how I screwed up. How to fix?

 

sounds like band is too tight perhaps?you might want to try redoing your adjustment.

If a band is too tight you could potentially burn it up, which means you get to do a rebuild.

 

Ok that what was thinking it never got tight thought. It never would click it clicked when I did the pan bolts though I think 24inch pounds

 

That means the band is already pretty worn. Time for a slip-fit replacement?

Yep, you can replace JUST the band. Cut the old one, take it on, slip in the new one, hook it up. Adjust. Done. They run 20 to 30 bucks. WITTrans has 'em.

Nope. Drop the pan, maybe the valve body, and off you go.

 

Ha, that's pretty cool. Do you basically just feed the band up and around the drum? Can you do both of them that way?

 

I think so. Certainly cheaper than a rebuild. They will get you a bit more life out of the trans.
