My 99 3500 4x4 5.9 cummins truck when in 5th gear was having a popping noise and then the transfer case manual shift selector was going into neutral while driving in 2high.


We could not find a fix and being a low dough house hold I just keeped driving in 4th only never using 5th for over a year.


Now its happing in 4th gear.


Driving ion 2 high and something pops and it goes into neutral on the transfer case.


Pull over, stop, put it back in 2 high and go again.


Now its happing in 4th as well as 5th.


Any help out there? I searched and see some others have had this problem but the threads and convo's fizzle out with no explanation or fix.

 

Sounds like an internal t-case issue. Probably the shift fork is worn, and the little pads are gone...... could be a cheap fix, just tedious. Need to tear it down to see.

 

Yea that's what I'm thinking.. We had dropped it a year and a 1/2 ago when it started and the smaller fork's pads were gone. We replaced it and a collar along side of it. Hung her back up in there thinking we had fixed it and it keeped doing it.


Guess we will drop it again. I just hate to go into it and miss something again that someone may know of.
